Should I change back to synthetic oil
Just puchased a 2003 RX300 WITH 130,OOO MILE
When I pulled the Lexus service records they used synthetic oil
for the first 100,000 miles
Last owner changed over to regular oil at that point
I would like to go back to synthetic oil on my next oil change
What do you think

-There have been previous discussions on synthetic oil on this forum. You may find many of them if you use the search button. I believe I ruined my rear main seal from using synthetic oil. I switched back to regular oil a long time ago. My rear main seal still leaks!

A few possibilities. One of them is to go to a synthetic blend. Right now with my girlfriend's 06 4Runner I confirmed a conventional was used by the previous owner (we just got the vehicle) and I am running an Eneos 5W30 synthetic blend for the next 5,000 mile to ease the transition to full synthetic. I might have also considered a W40 synthetic oil as a possibility before going to a W30 weight oil.

I got my '99 with 115K, and I'm sure it had dino oil throughout much of its life. I switched to synthetic (Mobil 1) at that point. At 135K, it hasn't used a drop between changes!

I drive a short distance
I take it easy as far as driving
About 15-20 miles a day
I live in Maine
The temps very between up to 90 degrees in summer
to a low of 15 degrees in winter
Vehicle is in a heated garage at night
Car is in great shape
Just trying to do the best thing for it
Thanks, Jim

If you want the extra protection go for synthetic. Try some Pennzoil Platinum or Ultra 5w-30. Or you could just use the Pennzoil all year round. Since the car is in a heated garage cold start up's won't be too harsh on the car.
If you stick with conventional, try some Pennzoil Yellow Bottle.
I'm a fan of Pennzoil which is why I always recommend it no matter if it's synthetic or not. SOPUS makes good products across their entire line.

When my 2000 RX300 and 2000 Toyota Tundra reached 15,000 miles I change to Mobil 1. Currently they have nearly 90,000 and 140,000 miles and no problems with Mobile 1. The oil is changed every 5,000 miles.

Mobil 1 should be fine...some people have had consumption issues, as did I but only for the first OCI in which I burnt 1/4 of quart in about 4,000 miles (not too bad), the second Oil Change that I did of mobil 1 had no consumption (also a 4,000 mile run) as the rings were beginning to seat better with mobil 1 and the car was getting used to it.
