Vish - you're kidding, right? Any junkyard I know would laugh me out of the building if I asked them to do this - they won't do it at any price!

Ivan1 - check the posts here - one guy recently got $2,500 for his RX300s with dead transmission from a Lexus dealer.

I'm not kidding, I've had that done before numerous times. My uncle owns a shop and we regularly use junkyards for such parts at the owner's request.

thanks guys, but 2500 i feel is such a low ball price because the car only has 115k and it in decent shape. if the trans didn't go i was selling it for 8500, and thats a HUGE loss on my end. repairs should be no more than 4k even then selling it for 4k is reasonable i feel. or am i just so upset that i'm not seeing the reality of things?

Few things have happened too quickly ... maybe out of frustration or your need.

First ... you have not told us what the mechanic saw when he dropped the pan. Transmission is the most complex part of the vehicle (engine is very simple in comparison). So we are taking the leap with you and saying you need a new transmission or rebuild yours. Rebuild yours or buying a rebuilt one will give you warranty, while getting one from a salvage yard may have its risks. Lets say at a cost of $3500 for rebuilt.

If you have it fixed may be you can sell it for $8000. Assuming you have an offer for $2500 as is. then you tend to loose $2000. So the question is should you invest the $3500 to gain $2000? The same question is going through the mind of some one who might buy the RX from you as is.

Second ... you have opted to purchase a replacement vehicle. Had you not, then after investing $3500 you could have chosen to keep the RX and sell it before your warranty on transmission expired. I would suggest, re think about the purchase and stay with the RX.

Lastly we have a saying that a dead elephant is worth more than the living one. You can part out your RX but it will be a hassle and recovery or money will take a while.

Note: The numbers I have used are for example only. You have to do realistic analysis.

Yes, the salvage yard has risks, but what I usually do is look for a car that's been in an accident because 9 times out of 10 that's the reason they got rid of it. That's probably the only reason you would find an RX at the junkyard in today's world.

You would be able to gain more money as Salim said, but it really depends on how long you plan on waiting around for the RX to be fixed and sold. I know in my area and all over NJ, I see many, many RX300's so they definitely sill have something that attracts new car owners.
Then again, I live in an area where you barely see domestic cars (unless it's a winter beater), it's probably because we are all educated!! lol (sorry to you guys that actually like domestic cars)

i didn't ask him what he saw. i'm know nothing about these cars, and the trans would need to be rebuilt and i could have done it with a warranty, but i ALREADY ordered my new car and there is nothing talking me out of getting it. i'm not keeping this car for over a month even if i fixed it so i refuse to put more money into it, and what if it doesn't sell, because i've had it for sale for a few months now and not one single offer over 5500. and if i fix it for lets say 3000 if i take these offers i can just get the same amount if i sell it as is i feel.

Bad situation. Really sorry for your troubles. Considering all the alternatives, dumping it for 3500 seems to best fit your needs. I would get a written quote to fix/replace the transmission from a reputable shop and include the information in an ad on Craigslist or whatever so someone could see that it is a real opportunity to pick up a very nice car with a new tranny for around 7 k.

Good luck.
