Default catalytic converter problem

for a couple of months now, the RX sometimes makes a clanking noise coming from under the car. it only happens on low rpms and after i release the gas. i just got my friend to check it out and he said its coming from inside the cat (right before the resonator). i dont have any CEL and its around 180,000 miles.

can i just put a straight pipe? if not, what would be a good aftermarket cat? im thinking magnaflow, but im not sure what size and model to get.

i also have an aftermarket exhaust system. 2.5" pipes and replaced resonator and muffler with magnaflow mufflers.

zombie,

There's an exhaust gasket that's right before the main cat and that can make a clank. I had that cut out and just put piping in.

Now, if it is the cat, I now have a Magnaflow 93506, http://www.cardomain.com/ride/221530...exus-rx/page-3 (scroll down a bit) and found that better than the 94005 that I was using before. Still have the 93506 after almost 4 years and no issues.

couldnt i just re-tighten something to make the gasket from vibrating?
im going to the muffler shop tomorrow and let them figure it out. i hope it would be cheaper then buying and installing the Magnaflow 93506.
thanks for your help lexmex

Yes, try tightening, there are two 14 mm bolts. However, that only did so much, before the popping started again.

The 93506 cost me under $100 online.

a friend looked at the cat and he said the clanking is coming from my maganflow magnapack 10416 http://www.hottexhaust.com/detail.asp?PRODUCT_ID=10416 can cherry bombs/glass packs go bad? im just going to replace it with an actual magnaflow muffler. hopefully it would make it quieter.

nevermind the shop found that the weld from the magnapack to the cat is loose. $40 re-weld fix ftw!
