Hey there. My RX is at 89k and im starting to look at doing my 90k mile service. I bought it CPO 2 years w/ 67k miles and i will only be keeping for a few more months and the $1100 the dealership is quoting me doesnt seem smart. I have a buddy willing to do it for less, but would like it done at the dealership. What do you guys think are the necessary things to do at the dealership for the 90k service. They inflate the price by all the inspections, so if i could just get the main things done i could prolly save a bit.

I recently had my 90k-mile service done at an independent (owner is former Lexus mechanic).

Many on the forum have said you can go far, far beyond 90k-mi for the service. I have no reason to doubt it.

The price is quite variable, depending on the optional things. In my case, the mechanic said the water pump felt like it needed replacement and there was some seepage, so they replaced the oil seals. This guy believes in replacing the accessory belts, even though they were replaced only 2 years ago.

Replacing the timing belt alone would have been about $500, but with all the every-2-year stuff, water pump, seals, etc. it came to about $1,100. I moved to a condo last year, and don't have a place to work on the car that is convenient any more.

From what I've read, it seems that an experienced mechanic knows whether or not to replace stuff like the water pump, seals, tensioners, etc., depending on how they look and feel. Anyway, that's my perception.

A Lexus dealer is going to get you for all they can, in my experience. If you don't know a Lexus-knowledgable independent, try a Toyota dealer.

I took my '02 RX with 95K to a Toyota dealer and asked them to do everything it needs. They replaced the trans and coolant fluids but wouldn't do the spark plugs because they said they're good for 120K. They said all belts and everything else was good. Get your own cabin and air filters at Advance auto and do them yourself. Left with about $150 bill. Not bad.

WV, some things you didn't mention are: oil change, wiper blades, brake fluid replacement, and timing belt replacement. Lexus recommends brake fluid replacement every 2 years (as I recall) and timing belt replacement at 6 years or 90,000 miles. (I don't think many people follow the 6 year recommendation.)

Hi Bob, Thanks for the reminder on brake fluid replacement. I was told be Toyota dealer that timing belt/chain is good for much longer than 90K. Can you confirm?

Are they willing to back it up? How much is much longer? 10K more miles? I believe the belts should go to 100K, but not much more. 90K replacement is a "safe" bet for sure.

Depending on what you've done or not done yet... 90K I'd do:

Timing belt
Accessory belts
Trans fluid drain and fill
Oil change
Brake fluid
Engine and cabin filter

Spark plugs too if you haven't done them.

Of course, some of above are more preventive things, but since OP was not keeping car much longer, then probably most, including belt would not be needed, but then future buyer might not see as much value because no maintenance was done.

If you're going to be selling it soon, wouldn't do the belts, water pump or plugs. All are are good for at least 120k and are very expensive to replace. The Lexus dealer will still be expensive for those other items so go to the Toyota dealer. ($1100 won't cover everything AlexusAnja said - more like $1500-$1800 for all that - so they aren't doing some of the items on the list).
