The K&N drop-ins are what most of us use, it may help, but 16 is about right for city driving.

I'm using the OEM air filter, and can easily manage 18 mpg in city (during winter).... In the summer i can get high 19's... Mind you, I don't drive like a grandma, i go by the saying "redline for a good time" (davidsfarm--Dave Rock)...

I use the K&N drop in. Didn't notice any difference in MPG. I also changed ALL my drive train fluids to synthetic, and still didn't make any difference to MPG. Tried jacking up the tire pressure to 5 pounds above recommended, still didn't make any difference in MPG.

Basically, not much difference no matter what I do.

Without stripping out the car you will not improve the fuel consumption. The only way i can think to actually improve it would be to add a turbo or a supercharger. Laugh all you like and argue it will use more fuel but if you set these up at about 4 pounds they can actually save fuel and perhaps give you better control over the mix. There are a hundred and one fuel de-magnifiers and fancy air mixers electronic air filters and chips that all claim to save fuel but unless car manufacturers actually use them they don't work as best customer would be the builders if that fails the public. Superchargers and turbos in cars when suited to the car often provide better power naturally but fuel consumption driving than their non turbo models due to hills starting and stopping etc.

I don't care for oiled filters like the k&n because of the oil film it leaves on the mass air flow censor. The filter leaves a residue like armoral leaves a foggy film on the inside of windows during hot weather. The oiled filters are fine if you clean the mass air flow censor on a regular basis.

High flow filters only flow more air when the throttle is open, which means more fuel. Not good if your looking for more mpg's.

No different brand air filter will give you "better" fuel economy.
Maybe back in the 70-80's.

Nowadays, ECU management makes it a thing of the past.
