Do you want to stay with the 300 16x6 rims? Upgrading to the 330 18x7 gives a bit more stability as well as a better look. It's a personal choice but I just wanted to make sure you know there are other options. Here's a set of 330 chrome OEM for less money.

With 235/55/18 tires the rolling diameter is almost exactly the same. Did they explain how 330 rims will cause these problems or were they just jacking with you? Literally dozens of people have gone to the 330 rims on this board with no problems unless you try to put too wide tires on them, 245 seems to be max.

Since the rolling diameter remains the almost the same the error in the speedo is less than 2%. I think it's like at 60 you are actually dong 59.
Since you are in snow country I imagine there are tires that are better for that area than down here. I use Yokohama Avid Invigors because they are a superb rain tire. If I had it to do over I would probably go for the 245/55/18 just to get it a bit wider. These wheels fit your car with no modification.
If you go to tirerack.com and plug in the size it will give you a range of prices for the 330 tires.
I have seen guys who have gotten chrome 330s as low as 450 but I wouldn't count on that, I think 650 to 850 is going to be the range if you can even find them. Sometimes they will have tires already on them. eBay is going to be quickest if you are in a hurry but they turn up on Craigs list. Increase the range you look on CL to include other towns in your area to improve your chances.

It is not worth it. if you have to do it, go with 330 rims like others said. These chrome will flake. if they don't flake by themself, the tire shop will get it flaked when doing your tires; if you are in east coast, they will flake for sure. I have seen ugly chrome wheels on our cars multiple times.
