I had this same problem - it was the cap, as others have reported. Snapping the stem back into the cap worked for about a week, then it started back up. It appears that instead of a simple float with contacts as it is in most cars, this system uses a strain gauge/deflection sensor or similar and the float pushes up on the stem, which acts on the sensor. The failure mode appears to be that when the cap gets old, the rubber shrinks internally (no surprise) and stops sealing the top of the stem against brake fluid. The brake fluid then gets into the stem and shorts out the strain gauge, causing the flicker-flicker-flicker-solid light/chime. This is also why the stem 'falls out' of the cap - the rubber has pulled away from the stem.
The solution I used was to simply replace the cap. Should last another 24 years or so...
I am always lurking reading but same thing happened to me today as i just changed rear brake pads yesterday and have had the error today all day. i will plug in computer and reset it tomorrow and see if it disappears as assume it will reset just fine.

This one is not a stored ECU fault, so a reset will not help. Just check the fluid level in the master cylinder and fill to the marked level. I suspect you bled away some of the fluid. and the level has dropped.

Reason: reset not rest

Correct i did bleed some away so will check fluid tomorrow.

Well it was the level indicator but i tightened everything up and then snapped a bolt and i am so weak at present due to injury i am surprised it happened but off to buy a new tension bolt. The one i had on hand had a longer thread which ended up screwed the calipers together causing pad to grind so off to store tomorrow to buy right bolt less thread longer shaft. I only noticed problem due to leak in line i am going to assume my master or slave is no good after i determine there is no leak after my pad change but going to now buy new rotors. The whole reason is have new coil overs and trying to fix i have added new control arms and just trying to make it all work smooth, Right now have a bit of a wobble under brakes and looking to make car handle better than new. I lost all my sway bars due to theft both factory and after market and now trying to find where they all came from.
First thing I did when I bough the RX was to purchase the service manual vol2 and improved my collection of torque wrenches [low, med, high].
I know it is a pain to constantly look up torques but the manuals are excellent.
For quick work (when the manual is not handy), I follow the following procedure.
Low torque items ... typically 10-12 mm fasteners, I use ratchet and hold the ratchet with my thumb and index finger almost over the fastener. The ratchet arm then sticks beyond my fist. This lifts the torque arm.
For medium torque I slide my fist all the way to the end.
For High torque I use the larger ratchet socket.
short term learning:
For spark plugs where I can not use the torque wrench, I get the sense of the bite/dig-in on the ratchet arm on a reference torqued plug.
There is a float like device in the filler cap. Have an assistant move it up and down with the cap removed (try not to contaminate the thing as it will go back in the master cylinder/reservoir.
A few people have reported problems with the sensor.

I am one of those few people. Replacing it was the surest thing. Bought it for $48+ $11 Shipping from Japan.
