Default New RX Owner Checking In

Hey All,

Just picked up a 2002 RX 300 today and am proud to say I'm a Lexus owner. I had my heart set on a 2001 LS 430 but with our first child joining us in 6 weeks, the wife won with the RX. But it seems to be a great car and I'm looking forward to many years of great use.

Just wanted to say hi.

J

Thanks guys. Bought it yesterday and took it to Toyota this morning for an oil change. Lexus wanted $120 for their service which includes oil change, tire rotation and brake inspection. I thought that was a little steep. Toyota changed the oil, checked the brakes and checked a ton of other stuff...for $35. My 2002 RX has 71k miles and I don't know when the tranny fluid was changed last so I'm getting it done with my next oil change. But everything checked out OK on the car with Toyota so I'm happy.

Welcome to the club! I have a 2001 that I bought with 60K miles...with the help of this forum you should be able to do a lot of the maintenance yourself if youare up for it...

Good luck with your new ride!

welcome aboard, make sure you do not do a flush when you have tranny fluid changed.
Drop pan clean or replace filter and refill....

Welcome and I second the above. No flush. It seems to be the kiss of death for the RX transmission.

Welcome, welcome! You'll get so much information on here, and I'll bet you'll start doing much of the work yourself. Congratulations on your upcoming bundle of joy. I miss those days so much... both of mine are now in college!

Again, thanks for the heads up on the tranny. So just drain and refill, huh? No flush? Toyota quoted me $79 for the tranny service so I'd have to imagine that consists of just draining and re-filling. But why no flush? If not now, when? Does the tranny ever need to be flushed? Please do offer a link or two to some threads. What concerns should I have?

And I can't wait to do some of the maintenance myself. I used to do all of my maintenance when I was a younger guy...looking forward to getting back into it. This forum seems great...ton of knowledge.

Also, what tires come recommended? I'll be needing some in about 5k or less. I had Falkens on my 2009 Camry XLE and they were great at a nice price. Looking to keep it under $500 mounted for four tires.

The flush will stir up contaminants into the valve body assembly. There is a thing called a fluid exchange, Which uses the transmission pump to exchange fluid versus the flush which uses an external machine to force the fluid through the transmission. The fluid exchange would be safe, however getting a dealership to perform it is iffy...Amsoil site has their method of doing the fluid exchange at home. The stealerships will push a flush because it is fast, and easy and generally they charge more. All profit. Take a look at the stickys at the top of the RX forum for transmission fluid change and learn what is an excellent tuturol on what is envolved with a fluid change.... I am on two Lexus sites and one toyota site, and the word is no flush...I have personal experience with the failure after a flush...Again welcome aboard, you are on a great site with very knowledgeable folks here.
