Brake Pad, original or after market?
Hi,
I want to change my brake pad. I am not sure if I could use after market pad instead of the original pad form toyota. Has anyone tried after any market brand name? Thanks

If you tell what you like or dislike with the OEM pads, you will get more useful responses other wise you will get opinions.
Price
Longevity
Noise
Dust
Impact of disc.
At the end, you will find it is a matter of compromise. I have stayed with the OEM.

Thanks for your reply. I think the Price and Longevity are the major factors I concern. OEM part is very expensive, about $60, while the after market parts could be as low as $18.

I see the OEM brake pads are $45 at irontoad.com and probably available for less elsewhere on the web. I have been getting very good life from the OEM brake pads, like the feel, and will continue to use them. If you go with really hard pads (long life) you risk wear to the rotors, in my opinion. The brake dust with OEM pads is a downside, but if I wash the car regularly, it is not a problem.

I've got 22k on a set of Akebono ceramic pads and there is still 8mm remaining as of a month ago. It would take a lot to convince me to use something else from now on.
Ceramics cool faster and there is zero dust buildup on your wheels.

I have had good luck with autozone pads, but I get the $60 ceramic ones. I don't think the cheap aftermarket ones are worth buying unless you are really tight on cash or selling the car soon.

I agree with Bob2200; I got Lexus pads at Irontoad for that price, also got rotors since I believe the old onces had been turned at least once. My daughter is not a performance-oriented driver (at least I hope not....) and we have been very happy. I figure I save enough doing it myself to allow me to spring for the Lexus parts. I have heard good things about the Akebonos and other ceramics, though.

I just changed my front rotors and pads with the NAPA True Stop brand. The pads were the OE Ceramic for about $30. I've been using NAPA for years on many vehicles and am pleased with them. Low dust.
