Default Tranny not shifting at high speeds after warming up

New to the site so here goes. 2000 RX300 AWD. Like others the trany will not shift to overdrive when it gets to about 50 mph (RPMS staying at around 4000). This does it only when it gets hot. I have changed the trany fluids and filter. Car had a knock sensor code going off and I am changing those out that out tomorrow. Repair shop siad it was the forth gear was shot and that I need a new trany. I am not so sure. Found a remanufacturered one with a 3year warranty for $2500 and swap it out. Any advice would be appreciated.

Welcome to the Club!
It's most likely the knock sensor. Get that replaced first, and we'll go from there. In most cases it's been the knock sensor.
There's no way for the mechanic to know the forth gear was shot, without opening up the transmission. So that's total BS.

Several CEL codes will prevent the overdrive from engaging including misfire and sensor codes. Get that fixed first, re-set the codes and see what happens. In the meanwhile, you might want to look for another shop!

Thanks for the post. Swapped out the sensors and wire harness Saturday and it seems to be shifting fine for now. It was a bigger job than I first thought but got it done in about 4 hours. Still have a CEL but I think that problem is unrelated. I hope others read this post so they do not get taken by Lexus and Toyota dealers trying to make up revenue. I think alot of repairs they recommend are totally uneccessary. Thanks again.
