Default Michelin LTX M/S vs M/S2

I was hoping to put this off until the end of the summer, but I will need to replace my 90k Michelin LTX M/S P225/70R16 tires soon because of cracking on the sidewall.

The LTX M/S is not made anymore. According to one tire shop, the only difference between the M/S & M/S2 is the rubber compound - the tread is the same.

Has anyone driven both types of these tires? Are the M/S2 as good as (or better) than the M/S, or should I hunt around, looking for a shop that may have 4 LTX M/S tucked away somewhere?

Also, there is a $70 mail-in rebate from Michelin which expires next week, so I'm tempted to pull the trigger... but it wouldn't surprise me if there is another coupon sometime soon. Does anyone have any insight on this?

Thanks!

I just put 4 LTX M/S2 on mine two weeks ago. Happy.

If you don't mind me asking, how much did you pay in total? I'm looking to get tires, but I'm looking for the best deal.

Costco. Unfortunately, I got there about 3 days after the $70 discount expired. Paid about $750 installed.

From all my research, it appears that Costco has the best deals on the tires.

I also notice that they fill them with nitrogen (don't know if this is good or bad, when I need air!) Has anyone noticed any improvement in MPG with the nitrogen?

I also buy tires at Costco with nitrogen inflation. Everything I've read and heard confirms nitrogen is slightly better than air, but I doubt the slight improvement in gas mileage can be quantitatively observed with any accuracy given all the other, mostly more significant, variables affecting mileage. A measurement would need to be done under controlled conditions.

It's interesting to note that some tire shops charge extra for nitrogen inflation, Costco doesn't. And Costco has all the other benefits associated with their tire program.

A few weeks ago I put a set of Michelin LTX M/S 2's on my RX300 that I purchased at Sears. When I was pricing the tires Sears quoted a price about $150.00 more than Tire Rack and I told them I thought that was way too high. Sears then said they would come close to matching any other quote I had and suggested checking Tire Rack. Ended up costing $20.00 more than Tire Rack and included lifetime rotate and balance every 5000 miles.

I went to buy Michelin M/S, thru Costco about six months ago. They were discontinued back then and even though they had a healthy stack of them in my size they wouldn't sell.
Rather than go with the M/S2, I opted for the Michelin Latitude, their replacement for the discontinued Michelin CrossTerrain.

I'll probably go with the M/S2 for my truck when its M/S crack, it seems the tread life on those tires is about 200k.

My BMW had four Maypops on it and when I switched to the Michelin Primacy it felt like I had 3 grand worth of suspension work done. The ride went from beater to butter.

Michelin coupons come out every 90-120 days.
I wouldn't buy a set without a coupon.

Once again, Costco has the $70 instant rebate on Michalin tires. Unfortunately, none of the local stores had the LTX M/S2 tires in stock. So onto Costco.com - tires have been ordered & have been shipped - should be here by Tuesday. :-)

Perfect timing for me - woke up to a flat the other day.

I put a set of Michelin Latitude Tour on mine.

I liked them because they are SUV tires, whereas the LTX M/S2 is for SUVs and Trucks.

Either way, you can't go wrong... Both the M/S2 and the Latitude are brand new models, so you know you are getting the latest in technology.

M/S 2 is a very good tire. I replaced the Dunflops on my wife's 4Runner with them, and the handling, ride and gas mileage improved considerably.

I also replaced my truck's tires with them. My gas mileage improved by 1 to 2 MPG (depending on how I feel like driving).

Been very happy with them in both wet and dry conditions. Highly recommended.

It was an instant rebate (online & in the store), which expires today (6/8/2011). It'll probably be back in a few months.

This months flyer has the $70 Michelin coupon. (June 9 - July 10)
Says the coupon also at Costco.com

I bought four Latitudes in Jan.

$660.96 4 tires
$4.00 VA State tire
$56.00 Mnt/Balance
$4.00 tire disposal
-$70.00 coupon
$33.45 5% VA tax

$688.41 out the door.
