CEL P0500 and ABS codes!
Hi all;
Has this happened to anyone here.
I have a CEL P0500 and the speedometer doesn't work anymore.
I replaced the speed sensor on top of the transmission with an AutoZone brand. I still have the CEL. (I couldn't find any Denso part number for this)
My ABS light is on, and the code numbers are 31,32,33,34, and 41
-Do these problems have anything to do with each other?
Anyone have any ideas before I have to go to the dealership???
Thanks in advance.

Any update on this problem?
I have the same issue with my '99 160k miles. The speedometer stopped working completely, the CEL and ABS lights are on and car has code P0500. When I pulled the ABS codes i got 31,32,33,34. The ABS light has been on for the past 2 years but I didn't pull the ABS codes until after the speedometer stopped working.
The other thing I've noticed since the time that the speedometer stopped working is that the FUEL gauge appears to be very sensitive and will bounce around alot when the car is moving. I don't know if this is related but it might be.
Has anyone else had or solved this problem?

UPDATE speedometer working
I reset my ABS and the speedometer is working! Reset the same way you use a jumper wire on the diagnosis connector but leave the small silver jumper in. Then press the brake pedal to clear it.
After driving around the ABS light did come back on but CEL P0500 stayed off because the speedometer was operating. I then pulled the silver jumper and read codes again and only got 33 and 34 this time.
Safe to say now that if you get the P0500 code with dead speedo, it's not the sensors on the trans. But at least one of the wheel speed sensors must be operating for the ABS to send speed to instrument cluster.
I plan to do some research to diagnose speed sensors. Do you have any info for doing that by spinning the wheel and reading voltage on the sensor connector? From what I've read on the net, the tooth ring on the axle is a weak spot. I'm sure that at 160k miles the sensors will not be easy to remove.

Good luck with your car. Let me know if you have any questions I can help with.

Thats great info!
I have my back seats out (Since April, I might not ever install them again!)
I have broken the rear passenger side sensor off. Now I'm going to remove the axle to get the remainder out this weekend and install the new one.
I want my speedometer back! I'm TRYING to hit the 400,000 mile mark. (I'm stuck at 337,000.)
I will post my results soon!

Yes, original tranny.
I purchaced it with 46,000 miles on it.
I change fluid (type 4) every 20,000.The engine does use oil, around a quart a week. Considering It "swallowed" a manifold washer when changing my knock sensors 100,000 miles ago.
-This is the most solid vehicle I have ever owned!
My wife wants me to trade it in for a newer one, but I'm not ready yet.
I don't know if I'm going to have time for my sensor replacement today .We are supposed to get snow. I'm not ready for that, too many unfinished projects!

I'm having the same problem. No ABS lights on, but the speedo doesn't work and the engine light is on with a speed sensor error. I checked the ohms on both VSS on the tranny and they are the sam as the new one I bought ($100). Has to be a wheel sensor, right? How can I determine which one? Seems they sell them location specific.

Thanks maxSteel ... all mu memories about the ghost chasing came flooding back.
Reminder, it is imperative that the the Voltage is good before chasing the ABS codes.
