P0446 EVAP code
Stealership says its charcoal cannister at about $300 plus $600 in labor. This SHOULD clear the CEL!? I'm selling this 99 RX with 122K miles so not wanting to put much money into it now as we've purchased an 04 RX. However, we need to get the check engine light cleared to pass inspection. Any suggestions or recommendation for an inexpensive/good repair shop in Dallas area? I would sure appreciate any suggestions or advice. I wish I had known about this site years ago.
Thanks,
Darren

Drenglish,
I just had the same thing done to my car. Look at the post I posted a while back. I just got mine fixed last Thursday. $670 for the cannister, $175 in labor plus tax and diagnostic. Total $974. I don't see how your labor can be $600.
We have to ask Lexmex about this.

May I say I changed my canister assembly a while ago.
It wasn't very hard. Its under the rear of the vehicle, under a black cover.
Purchaced mine through this forum, (Carson Lexus?) I think it was around $400.00
I also had a P0446 code. After the change, no more. (I did try a gas cap first.)

Like I just wrote in the other thread.....JAB from this forum gave me a part number for a corolla Vsv that may just be the part we need to get, without having to replace the whole canister like Lexus would lead us to believe we need to....I'll report back tomorrow if Toyota was able to install that Vsv or not and solve my 0441/0446 issue...

Let me revisit my situation. At 192K I had a 441. Cleared it but it returned. I started by replacing the PCV valve since it was cheap, but that accomplished nothing. I then considered the fuel cap, but at $40 from the dealer, and with no obvious defect in mine, I looked for other solutions. I took off the cover that protects the cannister and noticed two things: on one of the vacuum hoses, the only one secured with clamps not just friction, the clamps had rusted away and no longer applied any compression to the hose. And, there was conspicuous corrosion on the VSV. By this time I was also getting a 446 code. I removed the VSV and replaced it with the new one purchased from Toyota, mentioned previously. I tested the old one, and although the solenoid clearly worked I was not convinced that the passages were clear; someone on one of the Toyota boards said that they can get clogged with carbon. So, I replaced the VSV and the vacuum hose (with new clamps) at the same time. That was over 1,000 miles and countless starts/restarts ago. No return CEL. By the way, the length of vacuum hose was 4 inches and Lexus wanted $17 for it; over the counter from the bulk roll at the auto parts store it was $0.50.

Thanks again JAB,
Toyota is doing this service work on mine, but like stated before they are a client if mine,,,when I looked at my bill as of this afternoon...for scan three codes(441,446,171) and clean MAF for 171, I was at $57 taxes included....so I'm hoping they give me a break on the install as well,,,,they seemed pretty cool about the whole thing considering I took the Internet advice over theirs...lol
