Mobil 1 ATF or 3309
Hello All,
I have a 2001 AWD. Getting ready to do drain and fill of tranny fluid...My last drain and fill was with Toyota IV fluid....
After reading many threads here I am thinking of switching to synthetic...
Is "standard" Mobil 1 ATF compatible with Toyota Type IV?
I Know 3309 is but it is harder to find...
Thanks for the help.
P.S. I assume that the mixing of Toyota and new synthetic fluid which will occur is of no harm?

No regular mobil 1 atf is not compatible with toyota type-iv. This is what you need if you want to get mobil 1 atf : http://www.mobiloil.com/USA-English/...hicle_ATF.aspx or the 3309.
I suggest Castrol Multi-Vehicle Import ATF. I have that in my RX right now, and it shifts perfectly. It's also a synthetic blend.

Saw the Castrol at Walmart but was unaware it was a synthetic....You obviously favor the castrol over the Totota fluid

Got me a little worried reading this post. I have been using Mobil 1 full syn. for multi-vehicles in my 2001 RX for 2 years now. No problems. Got 115,000 miles. I just looked on the back of the bottle and it says it is approved for Toyota T-IV types. But your link says otherwise. Hmmm. Should i drain it ASAP and refill with 3309. I mean if it is listed on the back of the bottle it should be ok. Right?

Mobil 1 ATF works fine. When I was still in Mexico 2002-2008, that ATF did not list a Type IV compatibility (but now it does), but I did use it and still use it as power steering fluid. Currently am using Redline D4 for my ATF. Actually plan to do a drain and fill in the next week or so once the fluid arrives.

I said regular Mobil 1 transmission oil will not work, but they have special Mobil 1 Full Synthetic Transmission oil for Import Vehicles. That's the only bottle that lists Toyota Type-IV.
The oil I'm not talking about isn't on their website, or it looks different than the picture of the bottle they have on the website. Either way they have the same name.

I think the Mobil 1 ATF most people in the forum talking about is "Mobil 1 Synthetic ATF".
I check the spec of 2 ATF on Mobil 1 website. I really can't find big difference between them, can you? Neither mentions Toyota T-IV.

OK, I just found this on Mobil website. I hope it could help!
http://www.mobiloil.com/USA-English/...smissions.aspx
Answer:
ExxonMobil stands behind its automatic transmission fluids, and both Mobil 1 Synthetic ATF and Mobil Multi-Vehicle ATF are suitable for use in Toyota applications where Toyota T-IV type product is recommended. However, the Toyota/Lexus ATF is specifically designed for those vehicles and will provide optimum performance. It is difficult to say whether you would ever feel or see the difference in performance, but the Mobil products will not damage your transmission.
