hello all,
great boards! tried reading to see if i could find similar problems, but had no luck, so here goes.
i have a 99 rx300 70,000 miles, give or take. Anyway about a year ago, car stuttered bad, light came on, had it read, said coil, luckily was one up front, changed coil, problem solved, ran like a champ! 6 to 8 months later, stuttering car, code read, same p0305, bad coil, this time it said one in the back,, ughh! but i changed it with new coil, problem solved, ran like a champ. Now 6 months later, driving in mountains, (living out west temporarily, normally in midwest) anyway, in mountain, under load uphill i notice the car doing that little stutter, stammer, hesitation again,, not real bad, not bad enough to throw error code yet. but i almost wish it would throw code, as i am not sure how to proceed. 99% of time time right now it drives perfect, just now and then climbing in the mountains the stutter rears ugly head.
so question#1 why has it been through 2 coils in a year or so? and now why could it be , what seems like anyway, be getting ready to give me a third error code for a coil? i guess i am thinking there has to be a root cause? right? cant just be killing coils twice a year as normal wear and tear?
changed all the plugs. all looked fine.
any help or ideas appreciated.
thanks

Welcome to Club Lexus!
It is possible for the coils to die one by one. As long as it isn't the same coil dying, than I would consider it normal wear and tear. I am still on my original coils, but others on the forum have had to replace coils before.

Welcome to the Club.
How steep was that climb and how long of a climb?
Even if it is stuttering on a climb I wouldn't worry about it if that's the only time you are seeing it. You may want to plug in an OBD2 scanner and see if there is a pending P03XX code at all in there, particularly after one of these stuttering incidents.
The main killer for a coil is overheating due a bad gap (too big of a gap). I've been using Torquemaster plugs since straight since late 2005 and only had one coil go bust (and it was my fault for running too much carb cleaner into the intake manifold).

It is not surprising as most probably the coils came form the same manufacturing lot and usually they will have the similar life span.
