Default Cost of transmission service

I have a 2001 RX300 2WD with about 101,615 miles on it.

About how much should it cost to have the transmission filter changed and refill with transmission fluid. Taking it to an individual shop, not dealership.

I'm not having it FLUSHED, just replacing the filter and refilling the transmission with about 4 quarts of t-fluid?

Looking for an approximate cost.

Thanks in advance.

The parts are around $50. The fluid is about $6 per quart. So it is a matter of the labor...I used to do it all in less than 1 hour and that was being very careful....just call Toyota and ask for a quote, and then Lexus and hopefully your mechanic will beat those prices....

Labor time is close to 30 min and since it is rounded up, I would think shops would charge you one hour.

The shops will also have a line item for disposal charge.

If you have a small torque wrench, and have means of access (ramps or you are slender to crawl under) and willing to get grease under your fingernails, the whole job is 1.5/10 in skill needed level. The only difficult part is breaking the seal of the pan.

[Hint four screws near each corner sufficiently loose, so that the pan hangs on them once it is separated.]

got a quote for $254.00

Whys so damn much?
What am I missing?

It's not to flush the tranny, it's just a filter replacement and refill what was drained.

May have to do this one myself.

Rip off! I got mine done from valvoline for $99.

Try somewhere like Jiffy Lube.

You would trust Jiffy Lube to do this? I wouldn't let them check the level of my transmission fluid let alone drop the pan and replace the filter. But I am a little odd, that is for sure.

Did the $99 job use Toyota type IV.

It looks like the parts + fluid ~~ $80.

Any thing below 110 is a good deal and more realistic number would be $150. But quality/brand of parts would skew the number.

The labor is dropping the pan to access the filter, change filter, put pan back up with Gasket, torque the screws to 6 ft lbs. Refill with Toyota Type IV fluid and be done. +1 dont let jiffy lube touch it...you will be sorry....

I drain and fill every 10k miles, and it only costs me $25. Which is what the fluid costs.
The filter can be had for about $45, with gasket.
Then just add one hour's worth of labor (whatever the shop charges).

I go to valvoline to get my fluids done. I trust them 110%. Their shops are mostly in the mid-atlantic

Owner of shop said

$6 quart for trans fluid. Would need 4-6 quarts to refill after pan is dropped.
$45 for new trans. screen/filter.
2.5 hours labor for

total of $254.

So say $40 for tans fluid
$50 for screen/filter
that leaves $164 for 2.5 hours labor
Thats $65 an hour.

Why the hell would it 2.5 hours to do this?

Gonna call the dealer and get a quote

He also quoted $300 to change the spark plugs. How does this price rate?

2.5 hours is crazy long....as for fluid the most it will take is 4.2 quarts...I can do it in my sleep....As for spark plugs the front three are easy, but he rears are a pain. However they shouldnt be do till 125k miles and only use Denso or NGK iridium plugs...Absolutely dont use Bosch.....Dont doo them until 125k...trust me if they are the originals, they will look fantastic when you have them pulled.

$300 isn't a terrible price for all of the spark plugs. But, it should be around $250. Mostly because the rear's are a pain in the ****. It took me forever to reach them, I will never do that again. I'd gladly pay someone to change the rear plugs. I wish I had waited because I just had to replace the rear valve cover gasket, and I could have easily done it then, had I not done it last summer.
