Default Messy oil change fix

Has anyone out there came up with a fix for the huge mess that an oil change makes when removing the filter on the front of the block, oil runs all over the canister below filter and you spend 20 mins cleaning up the mess. I bought a oil filter relocation kit that advertised for the 1MZ-FE engine for a Highlander, but the filter stud was too long on the Lexus. [B]Have a kit for a Highlander if anyone interested (Doesn't work for RX300).[B]: Has anyone fabricated a shield or funnel system to limit the oil running all over the block? I dread doing oil changes on this vehicle but I have always done the changes myself. Can't believe the crappy design/ location of this filter. What ever happened to putting them near the bottom of the block where it is easier every 3k miles for god sake!!! Engineers are A-holes.

Nope, no fix. LOL, I just spray it down with a ton of brake cleaner. The oil drips for a few days, and then it stops. The oil just collects there and takes forever to clean.

BTW: The filter location really isn't that bad. I've done oil changes on much worse cars when helping around my uncle's shop. I actually find this filter easy to remove, once you've done it a lot of times and know how to attack it. It's a piece of cake. The only thing I don't like is how the oil just forms a puddle right there in the engine bay, and slowly drips out overtime.

Practice helps (knowing where to anticipate the flow to better catch it) and completely draining the oil pan before removing the filter. Also, if the engine is fairly cool, you can better do a controlled tip of the filter.

Another plus is that the oil isn't really black and staining like on a diesel car.

The trick is patience.

Drain fully from below.

Let the engine cool down.

Crack the seal of the filter and get a thin stream going.

Collect below and come back in 1/2 hr and undo the rest of the threads and make sure you tip the filter up, so that the oil inside does not spill out.

Just wrap an old rag around the underside of the filter when removing it - solves the problem for me all the time.

I do this all the times. Under the oil filter i put a bunch of dirty rags and remove the oil filter slowly until the filter is almost dry then i remove it. It's 90% cleaner than not putting a rag at all.

The oil filter placement is my biggest b1tch about this car.

My MDX is a joke compared to the RX. The filter is in the wheel well. I added a Fumoto to it and can do oil changes without any tools or a jack.

Old RX7's were the best ever for getting to the filter.

Yea, CG, but don't you have to turn the car upside down to keep the oil from running all over? At least that's what it looks like from the filter location. ( RX-7)

My dad used to have one and from what I remember the anti-drain back valve did a good job of holding the oil in the filter. Definitely did not load the filter with oil before putting the new one on.

I stick paper towel underneath and clean up anything later.
