Default Getting 14.5 mpg a gallon ... what can I do to improve?

177,348 miles.

1999 RX300

Things I've gotten done

- 4 new tires
- allignment
- new brakes/pads both in the front
- power steering flush
- brake fluid flush
- transmission/front diff fluid
- rear diff
- gear box fluid
- semi synthetic oil
- cleaned MAF

Still getting 14.5 mpg! With gas prices going up, i need to find out what i can do to conserve and save as much as possible.

I'm getting my sway bar link/strut mounts both in the front replaced tomorrow because of a rattling noise but I don't think that'll make a difference.

I don't have a check engine light or anything.

Full tank (until the light goes on) gets me 180-210 miles.

What can I do?

Grade 93 gas here in VA ... I pay $4.19!!

A few thoughts:

- Check the tire inflation. I keep mine at 32 psi.

- I use 89 octane, although the percentage difference in cost is narrowing as prices increase.

- A lot depends on driving style and mix of city/highway driving.

I put Regular unleaded gasoline and average 19-21MPG mainly highway driving at 65-70mph.

X2, on the air pressure.

What about the air filter? Have you cleaned the throttle body, and IACV? That can help with mpg.
Are your brakes dragging? You shouldn't be getting such terrible mpg.

Your MPG should improve as the summer gas blend comes back. Usually around April.

ya IACV also very important and dont forget your air filters too..and make sure your tire pressure is well inflated too. not sure if you have done coolant flush too. good for the engine. And timing belt maintenance too

Woops I forgot to mention those too.

- coolant flush 2 months ago
- engine/cabin air filter changed a month ago.

What do you mean by brakes dragging?

And Ive never done throttle body or the IACV so I gotta learn and get those done possibly. Not sure what my tires are inflated to so ill tell my mechanic to get it at 32 psi

Brake dragging means one of more brake calipers are bad and therefore doesn't release so causing it to drag the brake pads... since it doesn't release, its dragging and drag calipers = bad mpg

A good way to see if the calipers are dragging is put the car on the lift, and put it on N or D and see which one is not moving.

I have been getting 16 mpg with the snow button on as well... ugh

Got my sway bar link and strut mounts replaced. Both in the fromt drivers and passengers side. Also told them to put tires at 32 psi.

Noticed the car being more smooth and on the way home (12 miles, 40-65 mph zones), computer read out 17.6 mpg.

Dunno if this is forreals so I'll give it a few more days *fingers crossed*

City MPG on the 99 is not going to get much better than 18 if that...so I think at 17.6 depending on the way you drive it's as good as it's gonna get. I drive mine mostly highway and set the cruise at 65...without a lot of terrain I will get 23-24 mpg. Not sure I agree that 93 octane is necessary. Manual calls for 87. Save your money.

Not true, well at least in my case. In the summer, I can get 19 in the city with A/C, that is if I'm not driving agressively.
On the highway driving about 80-85 mph I can get 22, if I slow it down to 70-75 I can get 23, and 24 if I'm going 60-65.

I do run 93 octane, as far as the reasons why I run that gas octane, I'm not going to get into, because it has been discussed before multiple times.

It's very true for 99% of 1st gen owners. Your experience is the exception, not the rule.

That's why I said, "in my case".
And, I highly doubt 99% of 1st gen owners can't achieve 19mpg in the city. But, whatever floats your boat!

Assuming most people get the same mileage as you do is irresponsible. So your "Not True" comment really holds no water.

You must have missed the first 8 words of what I wrote. No where did I write, that other's get the same MPG as me. I was simply writing what MPG I get. I'm sorry that you can't keep your right foot off the pedal.

If you have anything else to say, please PM me. I don't want to Hi-Jack this thread and/or get it locked. Sorry, NyCrAzY.

That's where you were assuming. Not in first 8 words of the other post. Mods...please don't lock this up. I'm done.
