I have a 1999 RX300 with about 75k miles on it. In the past couple of weeks, when I'm at a stop then start going, it felt like someone bumped me from the rear. I took it to a transmission shop and he hooked up his computer and didn't find anything. Then we took it for a drive and it drove fine. I told him it's intermittent. He had me leave my car for a couple of hours so they could open the pan and check it. He told me they found chunks of metal and that I need a new transmission.
A friend is concerned because the mechanic didn't charge me for the diagnosis and thinks he may not have opened the pan because he would have had to drain all the oil and refill it. He thinks it could be fixed just by changing the transmission oil. I told him I wasn't there so didn't see them drop the pan. Thoughts please???
