Well look at it this way if the engine and rest of car are fine, the price is fantastic....Spend an additional $2800 to $3500 and get tranny rebuilt.....Then you are good to go....

Just make sure oil changes were done on time, because if they were not done on time it's possible there is sludge.

You need to make sure the current owner is just tired and it is not the case of knowing that the amount of money needed to get everything in ship-shape does not make financial sense [you need to put in more money than what the market value is].
If you are a DIY type and can save on labor rates, then it might be worth it ,,, but make sure there are no other problems.
