There is a guy who is/was on this forum who took a great deal of time to figure out how to do the conversion wiring. He decided to go with a newer generation of RX GPS's, because they made quite a few improvements in later generations. He sells/sold the kits and a number of forum members have them installed. If you do a search, you should find more information. Everybody seemed very happy with the kits.
I think it would be a very difficult job if you tried to figure it out on your own.
