Default Adjusting height of power antenna

Hey,
Just picked up a 1999 RX300 for my wife. Great ride! One little problem though. The antenna is about 2 inches high to make it into our garage when fully extended. For now, we are turning off the radio whenever we go into the garage. I know it's just a matter of time before one of us forgets, and we bend the antenna. Is there any way to adjust the antenna so that it doesn't go up all the way? Or, any simple way to keep the antenna from going up at all? We live close the the city, so I think the rear quarter-window mounted antenna will be fine most of the time.

TIA!

audilex,

Welcome to ClubLexus,

I looked in my 2002 Owner's Manual for info on a fuse that you might be able to remove and stop the antenna from going up.

Nothing there. It lists 2 fuses for the Audio. Check your 99 Manual.

Thanks for the info. Actually, nothing in the 99 manual either. Thanks for the heads up on the PM.

I've thought about just pulling the power connector at the rear antenna, but haven't tried it.

This point appears to be accessible from the inside, behind the interior panels in the rear.

The solution might be in fixing the garage door travel. I am saying this as the garage doors are generally of standard sizes, but, at times the door opener is not set to raise the door all the way.

I live in an older house, with a low-rise garage. The garage door is as close to the ceiling as can possibly be mounted. At the open position, the garage door is completely horizontal. Having it open more would just move it further into the garage; but it would still be at the same height.

Thanks for the suggestion, though.

Interesting problem...

This calls for some out-of-the-box thinking...

On the back wall of your garage opposite the door, paint in 2 foot high letters:

"TURN OFF RADIO NOW!" or if more visual impact is needed:

"LOWER THE @#$%&* ANTENNA!!!"

(substituting epithet of choice for the @#$%&*)

Just kidding of course (but it may just work)

Let some air out of your tires..or

Get the Eibach Pro Kit and drop your RX 300.
Nevermind, that's only 1.2 inches.

See if you can find a replacement antenna which isn't as long as your current one. It could be that simple. I've replaced a broken antenna on my taurus and the motor seems to stop (going up or down) when there's any resistance on the antenna. I'm guessing the lexus system works the same, so if you want, you can turn on the radio, and carefully make it stop a couple of inches short, then carefully epoxy the upper most mast. Make sure to slide the mast below it as high as possible leaving the upper mast not 100% exposed. Note when doing that, you'll have that part of the upper mast stickign out when the antenna is in. Or you can just not let the upper mast exposed at all and glue that to the second mast. That may be the best way if you cannot find an oem replacement which is shorter.

Sorry if none of this makes sense. It might if you fool around with the power antenna and find out how it works.
