I just read the other recent post about the cd player not working and it seems like they are having a similar problem. I wasnt aware of a MUTE button but the g/f says she has tried pressing it a bunch of times with no success. How easy is it to swap out a head unit if that is the culprit? I could easily DIY, but what is the cost of a used one?
Can you even rig up an aftermarket headunit with the way the dash electronics are set up in these cars?

The Amp is in the trunk area. A competent car stereo shop can check the signal at the amp and voltage.
I would get that checked out before trying repairing (getting repaired) or buy a used one. 2001 or 2002, the head unit got a slight upgrade, but cosmetically and fit wise it is the same as '99

Have the audio level tested at the Amp near rear seat and trunk.
