Default Lexus Newbie

Just purchased a 2001 RX300 with 131K. Previously been a bimmer guy and wanted something that required a little less maintenance for my wife (and upcoming baby). Looking forward to learning about these cars.

Welcome to the club. Please read the FAQ and other sticky threads.

With 130k on the odo, you are already at twice over the base warranty. Please have a reasonable maintenance expectation and I am not sure with this many miles, would you be going to Lexus dealership for their exemplary service.

Thanks for the info. A benefit of being a BMW guy is the amount of information on the internet for DIY people like myself. I've been pleasantly surprised with the amount of information on this forum for the RX300 and for Lexus and Toyotas in general.

At any rate, I will not be taking it to the stealership for anything. I plan on doing pretty much everything to the vehicle other than dropping the engine or transmission out of it... I may even be convinced to drop the transmission if I could verify my garage ceiling was high enough.

My hope is that I won't have any really big jobs in the near future. The vehicle seems to be pretty clean considering the mileage. I've verified that it was driven from 70k-130k by a senior citizen lady, so I'm hoping that means that it's been in the shop regularly for services. The dealer I bought it from had his mechanic look at it and said the timing belt looked like it had been changed recently... I realize the risk in taking his word for it so I may be taking a peak for myself to verify the condition. Transmission nailed all the gears and makes no funny noises and no leaks of any kind.

I'll try to snap pictures here over the next few days.

Welcome to the Club.

I used to own a 1990 325ic and then later moved to the RX300.

Update... best news of the day. Found a business card of a service shop in the area of the previous owner. Called the shop up and they confirmed both the timing belt and water pump were changed at 116k. This car is starting to look better and better to me.

You will really enjoy working on it. My daughter has a '99 we bought in 2007, and I got another '99 for myself last week. You will get so much info from the people on here. Welcome!! I'm north of you in Iowa.
