Default Roof Rack

I've been trying to find a roof rack to fit my Harrier and have drawn a blank locally. I'm down to possibly trying to pick up something that fits the RX300 on eBay, but I'm not certain that the Harrier and the RX are identical in this area. Lexus don't bring the RX in to New Zealand so I can't find a local car to compare with.

From other threads on the forum, I gather the US version of the RX had side rails fitted as standard, and cross bars could be bought to fit these. The Harrier doesn't have the side rails but instead has 'tracks' set in the roof on each side that look as if they are designed to have rails (or something) slide in to them from the rear end of the track. The tracks are about 1" wide and run pretty much the length of the roof.

My question is - is the RX the same in this respect ? ie do the standard rails mount in to tracks in the roof ? and how are they fastened down ?

Yes, the Rx is the same as the Harrier for the roof rack. We also have tracks running down the length of the roof. To install the bars, metal plates slide into the tracks then the bars are screwed down into the plates and kept securely in place.

The rails are not standard; they are optional, added on at port of entry. VaporBlue is correct re tracks and bars otherwise.......

Thanks guys. Sounds like if I can find something for the RX, it will fit the Harrier too. Great.

jeff, I know Thule make "feet" that fit into the tracks on the RX, and the standard Thule rack firs onto the feet. Our RX had the Lexus track and cross-bars when we bought it, but the cross bars are only rated at 75 lbs, and we wanted to mount a cargo box and/or kayak carrier, Thule didn't recommend mounting either to the factory cross bars. So, we talked the dealer into buying the cross bars from us and I just bought a Thule rack on ebay.

I am sure Yakima have a similar arrangement, but the Thule's are priced better here in Canada.

By the way, the money the dealer gave us for the cross bars is the exact reatal provce of the Thule rack.

Thanks John. I found the Thule web site over the weekend and they have several mounting / bar options that will fit. I've contacted the local distributer to see if they carry any of them. He wasn't too hopefull but is checking it out for me.
The RX/Harrier is a pretty rare beast down here, so there is not a lot of demand, but hopefully the rails are some sort of Toyota 'standard' and are used on something more common.
I haven't come across the Yakima brand down here, but I'll look in to it as well. jeff
