You can do a search here. You will find that it is very complicated, and not worth the hassle.
The best thing to do is a nav retrofit. It will allow you to have a backup camera, play videos from your iphone. Both of which will require an additional dongle to attach to the retrofit but still cheaper than moving the climate controls and such.
you can do a single din and use a wire harness its alot easier then a double din. I did a custom double din and it was a hassle due to relocating the climate control. The wire harness is easy no wire cutting at all its just plug n play.
Thanks for the great advice, I have found the single DIN face plate on ebay for $110 + shipping. My concerns are obvious: Will the single DIN behind the shifter allow for retaining the heated seats buttons and the cigarette lighter or will they need to be relocated?
Also, what kind of wiring harness is needed and will the new aftermarket single DIN radio render the stock head unit un usable (I know I cant use them both at the same time, but can I switch back and forth if I wanted to)?
And lastly, are there any good write ups from anyone who has done the single DIN conversion with some pics showing the details?
I'm still use the excisting for control 6cd and connect to AV in new 1din with 1 connection because have to change electric output from excisting to signal only.
I emailed the people selling that black console plate; got a very nice email back where he explained that the seat heater switches move to the underside of the new radio housing area, but you lose the lighter/power take-off and have to route that somewhere else if you still want it. I would guess you could tie into the existing speaker wires as long as there's no chance of both radios being on at the same time. One of the more knowledgeable people here can probably advise you better about the electronics. I hope this works for you. I've been tempted to order one of those faceplates for my daughter's '99 for a radio that her iPhone will dock with directly. Good luck!
Hey all!
New here, but been lurking for a long time. I've been struggling for a while like others to find a solid solution for replacing the RX300 radio and recently came upon a company who makes Tesla style head unit with mounting systems. They control the radio, bluetooth, AC/Heat controls etc.
While they do not have a model for our RX300s yet. They said if the demand was high enough they'll start making the units. So here's how you can help. Below is their info. Email them and let them know that you'd like a unit for your car. If they get enough people, they'll start making them.
I've attached an example of what their units look like. I believe they run around $700.
I have an Auxillery adaptor to plug into the back of the stereo instead of the cd staker.
I also have dvd in rear headrests with fm modulator. Not a cheapy works great.
I am considering installing a Western digital media player and putting small screen on dash center mount.
I wanna try to put in a single din radio and want to know how to wire it up? How do I get audio and not lose the factory radio and of course climate controls?
