Hey Everyone,
I'm VERY new here. I currently own two BMW's but have been looking to replace one with a good practical SUV. I've recently come across a good deal on a 2002 RX300 Coach Edition with 110,000 kms (~70,000 miles).
I've done a bit of research to find out that most do enjoy their vehicles very much, but I keep coming across the transmission problems. I have read about the 'flushing' problems, but what can I look for manually (in person) to make my final decision. That or do you recommend bringing it to Lexus and for them to do a full inspection?
I'm looking for any advice on what to look for when buying a first gen RX.
Thanks in advance.

Go through this forum and read our FAQ section and you will find loads of info and threads with pretty much the same title. Best of luck on your decision. I have always wanted a low mileage Coach Edition. Do some reading through the first gen forum here and you'll find answers.

Welcome to Club Lexus!
I agree with 99rx, you will find the info. you need.
IMO, the transmission problems are internet amplification. Maintain them right, (i.e. drain and fill every 15k miles), and it's very likely it will be just fine!
I'm still rocking the original transmission at nearly 200k miles, as is my uncle at almost 400k miles in his 99' RX300. Both of ours are AWD.

Welcome to the Club.
If you are talking about the tranny and looking at it. Take a look a the dipstick for the tranny (driver's side of engine by battery). Is the fluid red, does it smell sweet, do you see any small metal filings on the end of the stick?
Also try to find out any service history.
I don't know that an inspection with Lexus will reveal much more about the tranny issue itself.

Thanks guys. I did do some searching and yeah, it is the general concensus that it's 'usually' more common with the pre 2002 models, but still, my only hesitation is that reliability. I had the same hesitation when purchasing my two bmw's and their subframes, but I still ended up going through with them.
Anyways, if all goes well, I might be frequenting this forum a bit more.
Thanks

I have the 2002 coadh edition w 145k. NO tranny issues at all. Im 2nd owner and happened to know the first personally and have all the records since new.
so far did the timing belt at 100k, and new shocks all around.
Common little issues.
1. antenna breaks. Fixed myself for $29.95 on line. x2 as the first on failed.
2. D Drive indicator light goes out. never bothered to fix.
3. Dont' let the oil change guys mess with the air filter. They always knock a hose off and then yu get those dash warning light
We are seniors and have taken it on 4 -3000 mile plus rad trips with 0 problems. Love the heated seats and smooth comfy ride.
