Default new tech device to program keys....any advice....

http://www.ebay.com/itm/OBD2-OBD-II-OBDII-Smart-Key-Maker-Programmer-KeyMaker-for-Toyota-Lexus/200901954824?rt=nc&_trksid=p2047675.m1851&_trkparms=aid%3D222002%26algo%3DSIC.FIT%26ao%3D1%26asc%3D261%26meid%3D3159654796604842522%26pid%3D100005%26prg%3D1088%26rk%3D2%26rkt%3D5%26sd%3D261334693549%26
OK, I'm wondering if this device can help me. I've misplaced my remote (I assume master) key. Down to one working regular chip key. But have two properly cut keys, just not programmed.

Will this device program those extra keys?

Trying to plan a lower cost strategy to preempt the losing of the last key......

Maybe helpful observation: if I use an unprogrammed key holding the programmed one tight to it, the vehicle starts. Is there a way to measure the programmed keys magnetic field, or whatever to attempt to buy a key blank with a similar or "close enough" magnetic field?

No, you don't need to buy anything to program the key.

Do a search here, you will find instructions on how to program the key.

EDIT: I misread your post, I thought you had another remote key to program with.

I was lost too.

OP has a working key, but not sure if it is the master or not.

My understanding has been that you need a master key to register another key as a master.

I have come across a few posts where a member stated that the dealership has the facility to do a force register as a master. So best advice I can give is to contact the dealership and see if they can do a force registration. They should be able to tell if it is a master key or not.

As far finding a close-enough/identical magnetic slug ... the odds are very much against it.

If you read my post, I clearly say misplaced master key. And have regular working key. The use of the term "regular" is the clue....

And furthermore, if I had a second master, what would even be the point to starting this thread?

Your advice is certainly an option. However I like my under $15 option (I only paid $13.49 for it), versus the dealership forced master option, since I'm guessing that'll cost hundreds, and might even be them actually just using this device. Just because we own a Lexus doesn't mean we can throw our money to the dealer for everything.

And if I figure out how to measure the keys field, I can buy a boat load of blanks. Keep a few for me. Then offer the others up to members with the same circumstances. Certainly can't be a bad endeavor. I'm pretty certain there isn't thousands of different option on the field variations.

My post seems to have ruffled your feathers ,, that was not the intent.

At times it is as easy as picking up the phone and calling the dealership at a cost of a proverbial dime. I have personally witnessed the dealership here in Austin going the extra mile for customer. If the price is not to your liking, you can always say no, thank you. If you provide the dealership the key AND they have the process, all you will pay, will be for the labor .. 1/2 hr... and my estimate would be $60.

Let us know if the device works for you.
