what is the part# for the original gas cap on 2001 RX300? Is the tether included or does it have to be ordered separately?

I have no Lexus dealers around me, so I went to a Toyota dealer. They looked it up and sold me one with part# 77310-48020. However, it wouldn't fit properly. After several tries, I took it back them. The parts manager came out and tried it and also said it didn't fit right. After some searching, it turned out that it was for 1998-2000 RX300s. They were unable to find the part# for the 2001+ RX300.

I wonder what changed between 2000 and 2001?

Thanks!

The parts guide shows the same part (gas cap assy.) for all RX300 model years.
7730050010 CAP ASSY. It cost around $22.00 (before member discount).

Now I'm officially confused.

The nearest Lexus dealer is 4.5 hours away. I called them and they said it was 7730050010.

However, I got an email from Sewell and they said it was 7730053010.

I gave the VIN# to both of them, so I'm not sure why they are giving me different part numbers.

Sometimes the parts get superseded and new part number is issued. The differences can be cosmetic as well (with tether and without ... by the way my 99RX has no tether and the flip panel has a location to place the cap while filling).

My search on Sewel showed the ***3010 match SC and LX and ***0010 match RX.

[if you plan to order from Sewel, make sure you enter your Vehicle model and Vin in your account. This would prevent a 3rd person making a typo]

Also check if they would sell you the actual O-ring/gasket.

I called Sewell directly and gave them my VIN# again. Apparently my '01 RX's VIN# pulled up the 53010 gas cap. The parts guys said 50010 and 53010 did not "supercede" each other. They are two different designs. Wonder what the real difference is...

Even the aftermarket fuel cap maker, Stant, has two different fuel caps for the 2000 and 2001+ RX300s. Guess Toyota must have made some changes. Althought i don't really want to buy a $4.20 gas cap.

Please go the Sewel site and enter the part numbers and see what comes up. I too could have made the mistake. I think your local dealership is right.

Ask your local Lexus dealer order one of each part number - then take your current cap (and/or car) to the dealer with you and buy the one the works.
