i thought of that until the bulbs that came out of the 1 and D positions were both clear incandescent bulbs. The sockets were different colors but the bulbs were clear. There must be a significant meaning because they have different part numbers. Wattage, brightness, durability.
maybe lexus used a shorter lifespan bulb in D to earn more in service fees as they know it will drive a Lexus owner NUTS when they cant see when they are in gear

I had to replace the D bulb many years ago. The replacement through dealer has lasted longer than the original.

yeah, I am a member of the "no D" club as well, both on my LX450 (bought with the light out at ~154,000 miles), and now on the new-to-us RX300 I just got yesterday (bought with the light out at 166,627 miles) - here's a link to the original thread on "no D" club membership: http://forum.ih8mud.com/threads/no-d-club.195385/
