Can you pull of te bottom inner panel of the hatch?
Snaps are all around 6 to 8" apart.
The release lever pulls a cable which yanks the lever of the lock mechanism.
Once you determine what broke, post a pic and I will see if I have the part for you. If I do I will put it in Pay it forward thread.

here is the photo of the item that broke off. Appears to be connected to the exterior handle you pull to open the hatch and would probably pull the cable to release it. Thank you again

I have not seen that part. It must be hidden.
Did you open the release mechanism? 3 nuts/bolts at the back.
Dont worry I have the whole trunk, I should be able to get it for you in the spirit of Pay it Forward.

I pulled it out.
You have to remove the release garnish (lock and 2 10mm nuts). There are two plastic snaps (i broke mine) but you must use a small socket/nut to squeeze the plastic tab and then the garnish comes off. It may help to free the wire to the license plate lights but if you have a helper than (s)he can hold the garnish.
I am going to put the release in the pay it forward thread.
Please respond by PM.
