The weight you talk about is part of the damping system. Lexus is trying to address a harmonic (resonance ... here vibration) that can set up based on the way the exhaust is suspended to the body. [It is like a sting on a long guitar). The damper prevents the exhaust form vibrating and transmitting vibes and sound to the occupants and other people on the street. Mechanically is prevents stress on the joints in the exhaust system.

There is a whole science where practically anything can be modeled with a RLC (resistance, inductor and capacitor) and one can run measurements. This used to be the state of the art science before digital modelling took over. Even financial institutions would create the RLC models to test out various scenarios.
