Looking at buying a 2000 RX300, have some questions.
Hi Folks,
I am considering buying a RX300, its a 2000 model with about 150,000 km (93,000 miles) on the clock. My questions are as follows:
1) I've read on various forums that this model year is known to have transmission problems, have you had such issues with your RX? How much does it cost to replace a Transmission, in-case of failure?
2) What are some maintenance items I should be on the look out for that are unique to this model? Anything in particular I should check?
3) I am being offered the car for about $6,500 CAD. The car has no rust and the body is very clean. Is this a fair price?
Thank you for your help.

Oil consumption and transmission failures seem to be the big mechanical issues that the 1st gen RX seems to face on some cars. Oil consumption if experienced can typically be fixed by updating to the latest revision the rear valve cover. Worthwhile change if your rear sparkplugs have not been changed.
Transmission failures appear to be random from my observation and may be the result of transmission filter/fluid replacement infrequency.
minor issues with high milage RX include the occasional ABS sensor going bad and strut clunk. Both relatively cheap to DIY replace and refresh your vehicle.
Otherwise they are quite dependable as many report.
IMO, $6500 CAD is very good value.
Used transmissions average about $1000 USD plus installation costs.

definitely check out the DIY thread. As far as other electricals that may wear out and throw codes, front a/f sensors and ocv sensors may go. Nothing particularly hard to replace and scary for an older vehicle.

Lexus Test Driver
Fastnoypi covered majority of it. One thing to keep in mind is that at 93,000 miles you are at the 90k service, which involves the Timing Belt and associated components. Has it already been performed? If not, that's a good chunk of change and it would help negotiate on the selling price.
