Default oil change intervals/high mileage oil

How often realistically should oil changes be done? I originally heard just every 5000 miles;l however; when i talked to the shop I do oil changes at they looked it up in a lexus manual and it does say every 5000; however; since down here in the phoenix, az area; we are in a heavy duty usage area(or something like that dont recall exactly what the guy said it was called) because of the intense summer heat; and because of that it is really reccommended to be done every 3000-3500 miles. And oh yes the 5000 mileage interval was reccommended if I was running a synthetic blend which is generally what they use if I dont do high mileage oil. Is it ok to go every 5000 like Ive been doing; or should it be done sooner?

The old 3000 mile interval went out with the dark ages. Most vehicles using Dino oil are good for 5000 to 7500. Unless you are hauling farm equipment 24/7 (which you shouldn't, given the RX300 transmission issues) 5000 should be just fine. With full synthetic, you should be good for 10000. I can never understand why anyone would use a synthetic blend(?)

Well; that is what the shop I normally go to uses. Its not cheap junk stuff either its Penzoil so its not some low quality stuff. As far as the blend goes; well from what they told me its because the blend has some additives or something(again dont recall exactly the reason) that is a bit better than using regular run of the mill oil.
