Default A/C Leaking Freon

2002 with 250,000 miles. Summer 2016 replaced compressor and condenser. Everything worked fine. First hot day in New York, no AC. I wanted to try to recharge it myself it's something I've done before I know they have separate sealants that you run through and then you add the coolant. Anyone have experience with those products in this vehicle? Thank you.

Sealants are not recommended. Add a dye to trace the leak [uv light is needed to spot the leak.

Commn leak points are the o rings at pipe connections, condensor and schrader valves. I have used the arctic freeze product before without issue, but not until I fixed the leak.

Besides that sealants are not recommended, alot of the off the shelf sealant products contain excess PAG oil which usually is not needed. Just use straight freon products if you go for the seasonal "top off" route. Add crimped connections at flexible hose ends to the list of common leak points. A freon sniffer can be useful if the leak evades UV dye.

Personally, I think thats probably why compressors fail. You develope a leak and lose freon and oil, but only recharge with freon until no oil remains. The compressor chews itself up. There is no harm in adding 1 oz of oil with a recharge. Its best to suck it down and check the oil level in the compressor before recharging.
