Default P0171 and huge drop in fuel efficiency

Greetings,
My Check Engine light came on yesterday. Had access to old AutoTap ODBC diagnostic gizmo which displayed a code "P0171 - System too lean bank 1 "and allowed me to clear the code. I'm sure the code will return after a few drive cycles. It is the only code coming up. I'm sure others have experienced and resolved it. Would you kindly share your approach to resolving this issue.

Default Huge drop in fuel efficiency

Thank you for the informative link. Learned much about the error and its causes.
Now that I cleared the error code (without any other changes) and have been driving it for a few days, the error code has not returned so far. My fuel efficiency has dropped significantly. I used to get 16-17 mpg in city driving which is close to its official rating. Now I am getting 10-11. Please point me to where I can find information for steps to take to bring it back to normal.
