Decapitating wheel rotation sensor. Just remove it and keep it out of the way.

Thanks, just to make sure.. is this the same thing as the wheel speed sensor that is located on the back of the hub?

When I had it up on jacks a while back, with hands on 9 and 3 I could move the driver front wheel. But I don't suspect bearing (yet) because I don't think ettatic pulling is a symptom and also there is no bad bearing sound. Also, it is a pretty expensive procedure :-/

Was the play only @ 9-3 or other positions?

Bearing play will be at all locations. 9-3 only is steering link [tie rod ends or the whole rack]

Thanks shah, I'll check for that. Makes sense now that you said it. Would bad tie rod make the clunking sound?

Clunk can be anything but for tierod problem you would notice a slop before a clunk.
IMHO you are overthinking the problem. I would recommend going to a suspension place and let them diagnose.

Metal clunk going over speed bumps is:
1. bad sway bar bushings. #1
2. loose piece of metal in the trunk that is heard in the front. yep, it's a large resonating metal box
3. power train mounts.
4. loose exhaust pipe

One wheel has play at 9-3 and 12-6. The other has only 9-3.

9-3 is most likely tie-rod and rack.

12-6 is likely control arm or ball joints.

Both of the above are very easy to check by suspension place.

9-3 & 12-6 on the same wheel may be bearings. The bearings are less likely as they are not the cone type.
