Default Charcoal canister vs Evap canister location?

Hi,

I'm trying to debug an error code on a 2000 USA RX300 and have a question about documentation (not the code here please). Some docs show a charcoal canister that sits behind the air filter intake assembly. I haven't removed that air filter assembly yet, but all I see back there is the typical big round power break vacuum tank. That said . . .

I do have a big evap assembly under the rear of the vehicle. It's under where the rear spare tire well is. Looks like a big charcoal canister is part of that assembly.

Question #1: Could it be that if the canister is behind the air filter, it's not USA docs, and if the canister is under the rear wheel well, it is USA documentation?

Qustion #2: If the canister is in fact what I'm seeing under the rear, one of the connections appears to require some kind of special tool to remove it. It's the widest hose that's closest to the ground and it has the ribbing on it :

Question #3: Do any of the hoses on this evap assembly have fuel in them? (the one that's on top of the big ribbed hose is stiffer and looks like fuel line hose).

Thanks again for your help.
Regards . . .

No special tool needed for that big hose.
No liquid fuel under normal circumstances, this is a vapor canister

What he said. that large hose disconnects by hand if memory serves. I have not had to mess with it on my current car, but I had to replace one more than once on my scion that I got rid of a couple of years ago. Set up exactly the same, and in the same location. A little water may drop out when removing, but that is it. As far as what's behind the air filter, I have nothing on that one.

Hi,

With regard to my OP, I've determined that any docs or how-to's that show a charcoal canister between the air filter housing and the firewall are NOT for USA use. USA RX300 have the charcoal canister integrated into Evap Canister assemply, that is bolted up under the vehicle under the spare tire well.

Hi maxSteel and AgedGS,

Thanks for the heads-up on that hose connection. I now see that page 10 of "EVAP Testing.pdf" found here:
https://www.clublexus.com/forums/rx-...ml#post2218270
shows how to remove that hose connection.

On a related note and if interested, I posted one fix for the P0440 code here:

I wish I would have seen this when I was chasing down that issue on my old Scion! Who'd have thought that such a common issue among Toyota products wouldn't have been remedied by the manufacturer.
