the cheapest brands out there on ebay will pull the codes for you if that's what you really want. You can pay big $$ for a non-car specific Autel or spend $1400 on a Toyota Techstream Lite cable and software for Toyota/Lexus and have the ability to program your windows, etc..

Scanners are like flees - many and many.
Free Torque app and $7 BT dongle for it will read all codes for you plus give lots of general power train information. And it's sort of kewl.
But, if you want to read ABS codes, transmission codes and other "non general" ones, you need an ABS/ CAN BUS scanner. Harbor freight Tools, around $120. Big, ugly - very functional.
Now, if you REALLY want to get into your car guts, you need Toyota compatible software, which is the above mentioned Techstream, or other compatible ones. There you can start taking chances with scanners from Aliexpress starting at around $70, promising you full Techstream functionality - and all the way up into $5 000 plus for full blown legit Techstream with interface.
Choice is yours.
