Default Anyone Towing with high mileage RX??

My '02 AWD came with a towing package that I have yet to use. She now has 270k and I need to start using her for some towing. I've been diligent with my trans fluid and filter changes but I'm a little weary as the place I need to tow to has a BIG hill to climb. Anyone out there using an old high mileage RX for towing have any advice??? Just keep my fingers crossed?!?! :-)

What are you planning to tow?

So according to the U-Haul website, the largest trailer my Lexus can tow is a 6'x12' cargo trailer. That would be the maximum but I believe I wouldn't need more than the 4'x8' trailer. I was actually a little surprised to see a 12' trailer listed. That would more than meet my needs but it may be overkill. Likely stick with the smaller one especially with a large hill to climb......

Well max is 3500lbs. Don’t think I’d come close to that. Let’s say 2000 lbs max

I think you're out of your mind even considering pulling 2000lbs with an RX even if it was brand new.

Well thanks so much for the valuable information carguy. Perhaps you should send your comments directly to Lexus rather than wasting my time. Have a nice day!!!

2000lbs should be fine, I can move my 3200lb, 20' car hauler around as long as it's empty, haven't tried it over the road though. If I can move 3200lbs around town on a 213,000 mile rx300, I'd say you're good with 2000lbs.

That being said don't blame me if the transmission goes out.

Thanks for the advice. I doubt it will even be 2000 lbs but good to know your experience. I do have the towing package with the extra trans. cooler and I change the fluid often. I’ll see how it goes. Thanks.

For reference for the rest of us, it would be cool if you post how it went, good or bad. As someone at 213k, I am very curious.

It will likely be towards the end of the summer but I will try to remember to post my experience. Thanks for your input.....

1999 RX300, 195,000 miles, original owner. We tow our Sea-Doo jet ski (900lbs plus the trailer) but I wouldn't tow anything heavier for any length of time.

Thanks for your comments. Does your RX have the towing package? I’m wondering if the extra transmission cooler included in the towing package makes a difference.

I haven't been on here in a while, as I no longer own a Lexus, but I once owned an RX300 with about 230k+ miles, which I used to tow my boat with (2500 lb, plus 700 lb trailer, so 3200 lbs total) without an issue. About 30 miles to the lake. And my car did NOT have the factory towing package. Just keep your maintenance up. Good luck.
One thing people don't seem to realize is that if a manufacturer rates a vehicle to tow 3500 lbs, it's very likely a conservative figure, and the vehicle is in all probability capable of a lot more, but the manufacturer wants to limit their liability. I hear and see a lot of gnashing of teeth on the BMW forums about towing with a Bimmer (I now drive and tow my boat with an '07 BMW X3), but I trust that BMW (and Lexus, along with the other car makers) know what they're rating their vehicles for.
Again, good luck to ya!

Thank so for posting your experience.
I have been on top of maintenance. Dropped the pan and changed the filter twice, each after about 100k. Also drain and refill about every 20-30k or yearly. People tell me I’m wasting money on fluid but I’ve had no trans issues and to me fluid changes are cheap insurance. I’ll post my experience later. Thanks everyone.....
