my lexus stalls out on starting
hello guys. This is my first time making a post here, though i have benefitted a lot from discussion of problems and solutions here in the past. Recently my lexus (rx300 awd 2000 model) dies immediately after starting, unless i keep pressing the accelerator to give it gas. this does not happen on immediate restarting when the engine has warmed up sufficiently after a drive. my small research here points to the fuel pump resistor and i 'd like to start from there as i have cleaned out the throttle body and iacv about 3months ago. pls i need the location of the resistor, and pics will be a mighty help. Thanks. Phellyx

Please check IACV [Idle control valve]. We have a DIY that describes the fix.

Make sure the slug can twist freely and rest of the piping is clear.
The electrical part can go bad too and that would not make the slug turn appropriately.

Thanks Salim and Greg. Just finish cleaning the TB, MAF and IACV few hours ago. They were unsurprisingly which clean, and the rotating slug on the IACV was quite free. Job done, problem still persists, sadly. starts fine all the time, then dies immediately. if i continue giving it gas, it picks pick and idles fine. drives well but seems to stall at prolonged traffic stops, so i keep gasaingnit gently to keep it alive. other that that no other driveability concerns. i think i still need the location of the fuel pump resistor, and how to test it. Thanks. Phellyx

Yes, and the wires/connector can be bad.
Essentially it is like a motor and the ECU sends electrical signal to it to move the slug electro-mechanically to allow oxygen (air) to enter. This extra volume of air is metered to keep the idle speed (no gas pedal).

Sorry about your 2000 RX300. How about the spark plugs?
My 185,000 miles 1995 Toyota Avalon got the same problem as yours. It turned out because of dirty IACV. I bought a clean, used one on eBay to replace it. Problem solved.
Then last year my same engine 1MF-ZE 1999 Lexus RX300 with 120,000 miles stalled out on starting, too. However this time it was because of the spark plugs. After all of them were replaced, no more starting problem.
