Default 2001 RX 300 Motorized Antenna Problems

Hello fellow Lexus owners,
I currently own a 2001 RX 300 and it is an amazing car except for one small issue; the antenna. The antenna motor itself still works, but the antenna fails to raise and retract with the motor. However, it can still be manually raised and lowered by hand if the need arises. I don’t mind it that much except for the grinding noise it makes whenever I turn the car on or off. My guess is that the cable that hoists the antenna up or down is snapped, however when you pull/push the antenna you can hear the teeth of the cable clicking from inside. Does anyone have any thoughts as to what this might be?

you pretty much identified the problem, the cable inside is snapped or teeth have worn off. Time to buy a new mast replacement. Online, they are anywhere from 12-50

I have had varying amounts of luck replacing the antenna mast in our RXs. Eventually I replaced the entire assembly in both vehicles. Maybe it was my technique!!

If a portion of the plastic is broken inside [left behind] then you will have problems till you open the assembly and remove that piece.

It is important to lay the portion that you took out and compare it with the replacement. If the old is short, then the rest of it is stuck inside.

I always had groaning of the motor [more pronounced when the engine is not running]

I replaced the toothed belt drive in my antenna when it did this. Was never very satisfactory so I ended up replacing the entire antenna ($75, new). Unfortunately, there are very few new OEM ones available now and those that are available are more than twice the price. You might want to try this:

Just an update: as of today, the antenna problem has fixed itself strangely enough. It is working fine now for no apparent reason.
