Check Engine Light On right after Regular Maintenance
My initial delight over the price I paid to have my 99 RX300 timing belt changed was squashed after I noticed the Check Engine light is now on all the time. He also replaced the radiator hoses and flushed the transmission. Anyone know if maybe the mechanic just forgot to put it back together properly?
Thanks!
Incidentally, here's what I paid:
Timing Belt $46.36
Serpentine Belts $49.90
Labor 3.5 hrs @ $70 $245
The mechanic also did the following:
Drain, Flush & Fill Transmission $50
Upper & Lower Radiator Hoses $56
Coolant (Dex-Cool) $12
Labor 1 hr @ &70 = $70
Total Labor $364.95
Total Parts $164.26
Thanks!

It really would help if you go to an Autozone or a mechanic with an OBDII code reader to let us know the code as check engine lights seem to be rampant recently.
I had a problem where my air/fuel sensor was full of the oil from my K&N filter. Had no idea until a Lexus mechanic helped me out. After cleaning the filter with brake fluid cleaner, I pulled (with the engine off and the key OUT of the lock) the No. 13 EFI fuse, a 20 AMPer, for about 10 seconds. This erased the check engine light and no problems since.
Incidentally, what about the water pump?

Thanks Lexmexico,
I'll ask my mechanic if he has an OBDII code reader. About 15 years ago, I was a porter for the service department at a Nissan dealer. A mechanic there showed me there how he turned off the check engine light: he cut the wire to it!!! I don't want that to happen to me.
About the water pump: I was pissed when I found out that the mechanic just went ahead with repairs without even giving me an estimate or a call first. He told me he would call first. When I spoke to him about it, he said he thought that I gave him the approval to do whatever was necessary. I asked him why he didn't replace the water pump. His response was that it looked like it was in perfect condition and he couldn't justify replacing it.
After dropping the car off at the shop, I found out here that the timing belt isn't scheduled for replacement until 90k miles. I am at 8ak now and probably could have gotten anouther year out of it since I now work from home. Again, too late because the mechanic just went ahead and did the repairs without my permission.
