Rear main seal leak is at this stage mostly cosmetic for the floor. Personally, I would not plan to have it addressed unless something else forces your hand to access it.

Agree. I'm still weighing my options. So far I went to 3 repair shops. Each opened their books to find out the average amount of time it takes to replace rear main seal on a 2001 Lexus RX300 AWD. The results were - 11 hrs ($1500), 16hrs ($2300) and 7 hrs ($700).

Maybe I'll just get a cardboard box ($free) and stick it under car to catch leaking oil and fuhgetbouit.

Default Update

The leak slowed significantly, almost to a stop. I have not done anything. But my buddy (a car mechanic) told me that sometimes when there's a leak related to the crankcase seal - check the PCV. He said if the PCV is old, it can get clogged then increases the pressure causing oil to leak out thru the seals. In any case, I replaced the existing old PCV. The old one was greasy and dirty and hardly made rattling sound when shaken. I will monitor area for anymore leaks. I hope this resolves the rear main seal leak issue or non-issue.

Red top is the new genuine Lexus part. Black top is the existing old dirty PCV.

Sorry for the late reply but yes it stopped after I replaced the pcv valve. You should try replacing yours and see if your leak stops. The pcv are not expensive to replace. Good luck.
