An exhaust leak has started on the flex pipe. Can this make the brakes hard to press? My brakes are harder to push than usual and I changed the brakes 2 months ago. This was a sudden change. I see the brake booster needs vaccuum to work, would the exhaust leak cause the hard brakes?

Nope. Brake booster is operated by negative pressure from the engine. Actually, as a byproduct, it tells you how well is compression in your engine, as leaky rings will cause poor compression = poor suction from the engine.
There is a donut shaped seal where exhaust manifold mates with exhaust pipe. THAT I know leaks eventually and can be replaced to a tune of few bucks and rather arm scraping shoulder twisting equilibristics to get it out. Takes about an hour. As I doubt it's actual pipe that leaks. Unless you seriously hit it with something.

I learned recently that oil control valve malfunction can cause hard braking
