Cleaning MAF vs Buying New MAF?

I’m debating on whether to clean the existing MAF that I have, which is throwing a P0172, or buy a whole new MAF sensor. I want the internet’s opinion before I throw money in for a new MAF sensor.

I have been reading Toyota/Lexus DIY forums for many, many years. Have read countless threads re MAF sensor issues. In 99.9% of the cases, a good cleaning solves the problem, if, in fact, your lean code is being caused by the MAF sensor. I have cleaned MAF sensors on my old 99 RX300 and 99 Toyota Avalon several times over the years with excellent results. Have done the same for friends and family members. Sometimes people make the mistake of cleaning the IAT sensor instead of the wires so they incorrectly think cleaning did not help.

First clean it.
If the error persists, check the wires and connectors.
If error persists, try to get a live data or consider replacing it at that time. Just as Art said, make sure you are addressing the right component [part of rechecking your process]. Based on the failure history here (limited data set) .. cleaning fixes the issue.

I took Art’s advice, and cleaned the MAF sensor. Low and behold, the car runs correctly, just because of a tiny sensor. No more codes! Everything is finally straightened out, except for the paint and body work, since this car has salvage history and has been repainted before. The car is at 178k miles, hopefully the car will last till 250k, that’s my goal.

Perfect diagnosis Art.
Thank you.
The little thingy is telling the computer how much oxygen is entering the engine and the computer then allows the amount of fuel for complete burning. If you use more free flowing air filters or reusable/oiled type, the sensor needs more frequent cleaning.

I cleaned sensor 3 times I believe, but it finally ended being replaced. Every time it was shorter period of time before code returned. I think, I got good couple years out of those clean ups though.
