Default FUEL pump

Hey CL members,

Just wanted to find out what have you guys been using for replacement Fuel Pumps?
Finally gave up the ghost after 348k miles.
Luckily it was on my driveway.
I know a side from OEM, Denso's are the next logical thing.
Any reliable sites you can direct me.

Thanks.

Please be sure to share with us what is involved in changing the fuel pump. Failures seem fairly rare, hence relatively few posts on the subject. I need to do mine, but will wait till you have done yours.

Considering how messy and toxic this job is I wouldn't replace it with anything but a genuine Denso fuel pump. This is one job you only want to do a one-time fix and forget it.

Thanks for the reply and the link.
This what i was looking at as well.
But what kind of bothers me is the “Note” they put in.
Am i getting a genuine Denso part or a Denso box with a diffirent manufacture part that is a Denso supplier?

As long as they partner with a manufacturer that meets or exceeds Denso's Specification, then I wouldn't worry. You could always order it through Wal-mart where America shops.

With due apologies to Audiqv8 ....
Better?
The original lasted almost 20 year, If the replacement is as good as the original it will be still working while the vehicle is getting crushed.

Bigger:
The pump goes through an opening (width) and vertical (length) space is limited as it is between the confines of the bottom and top. I would suggest match down to the bolt down holes if an after-market is selected.

G'Day Mate, if you're old enough you might remember the tv show 6 million dollar man you will remember the intro at the beginning. "We can rebuild him better faster, stronger." That can be said of most thing if you're willing to throw Money and time. But as Salimshah already pointed out the OEM has lasted almost 20 years and gone over 348,000 miles.

EVO powered pump.

I know i might get grilled on this but here goes.

Disassembly is pretty straight forward.

— Disconnect neg. cable

— Pop off gas cap

— Take out passenger rear seat. (4 clips for the upholstery, a 10mm strap bolt and 4 14mm bolts for the seat tracks.

— Take out sill plate trim

— Peel out carpeting

— Pop the cover off (just held by some sticky adhesive)

— Disconnect fuel pump connector

— Slide out Yellow lock clip for the fuel line. (Do not lose this) (gas will flow out so get your rags or pigmats around it and under the vehicle)

— Mark the position of the cover plate and FP assembly to the tank to ensure same location for install.

— Take out 8, 8mm bolts (mine were so rusted that 2 of them rounded off)

— Pull up on the FP assembly high enough to disconnect a hose that is attached

— Secure the hose so you wont have to go fishing for it later.

— Move the FP assembly around to find the right angle for it to come out.

— Watch out for the fuel sender for it might get snagged.

— FP is inside the FP assembly which is just a clam shell design. Everything just snaps off/in.

— Top side comes out first then the lower one. This is where the FP will slide out of the filter.

— Reassembly

— Replace any parts that you feel deemed necessary.

Total time - 1-2hrs including beer breaks.

Takes me back. I ordered a Denso replacement from Rockauto and put it in a couple months ago. As far as fuel pump replacements go, as long as the tank doesn't need dropped, consider it an easy job. This one is a little annoying because the seat and carpet. But once the module is accessed, it's pretty straight forward.

Nad I feel for you with all that rust! Mine wasn't like that at all! My only suggestion would have been that at that age mileage, and already being in there, you should have replace the in tank filter and strainer sock. The first one linked is what I used on my GS when I installed a Walbro 255lph pump and it looks like the same style in your RX module.. However it says it doenst fit that application when I select it. The second one linked is the one that claims to fit the RX.. however doesn't look as close to it as the first one.. strange..

Anyways, just wanted to share these filters so whoever does this job can choose to replace the filter while they are at it if they want. They are cheap enough to do IMO. And replacing the pump is the time to do it.

Thanks guys.
Will share it at the DIY section.

TrueGS300, thanks for the links.
I just wanted to get my RX running so i can move it around my driveway. (blocking my spare car and seal coating on Mon)
I’ll take it apart again once it gets to less than 1/4 tank.
It was at FULL to the rim when i did this job.
Sock looks stained but clean and free of any debris. (Suprisingly)
Couldnt tell the filter since it was enclosed.
But with 348k, your suggestions are valid.
87 oct is all I've put in this tank.

Speaking of Walbro’s, i was considering this as replacement since these are pretty bulletproof as well.
Cross referenced it and found that a Walbro TCA324 kit should fit the RX. (Although not listed) (i used a 2000 ES300 which also takes a Denso 951-0002 FP)
