Default Thermostat DIY?

Hello

I searched the forum and didn't see a Thermostat DIY, perhaps there is one and I missed it.

Anyone know of one?

Also what is required besides the Thermostat and its oring?

How much coolant is lost during this job? Mine was just recently changed for a water pump job so will only need whatever amount of coolant is lost.

Thank You!

Just a few tips I have learned from doing this on my RX and Toyota HL: First, get a Lexus/Toyota replacement Thermostat, and make sure the "jiggle pin" is oriented to the top. I've had bad luck with other brands, and it's a real PITA to have to do this job anyway. Second, there is an Oring that goes on the metal intake pipe that's inserted into the Thermostat housing. This is NOT to be confused with the slotted Oring that goes around the Thermostat. The one I'm talking about is probably unknown to most folks who are doing this job, and it's definitely a maintenance item, probably should be replaced every 100K or so. When you do the drain from the cooling system (only a simple drain from the radiator petcock is needed, and it drains out a little less than a gallon of coolant), remove the inlet hose and pull back on the metal tube (after unbolting from the side of the head) that goes into the Thermostat housing, and you will see the Oring. Then just clean things up and put a new Oring on, and reinsert when the job is being finished. I used a very thin film of synthetic grease applied inside the metal pipe to help the Oring slide back in. No more mysterious leaks from that area, which I had been seeing but unable to identify the source. Hope this info is useful to you. And by the way, it's REAL EASY to drop those Thermostat flange nuts behind the engine, where they disappear into "neverland", and if you have some magnetic socket inserts, they can prevent that from happening!
