It's looking like I'm adding a 1st gen rx to my collection and I had a question in regards to the factory load bar weight rating and the ability to add a Tepui Roof Top Tent up top. Would the bars be able to withstand about a 100lbs of weight on the road or would I have to look at aftermarket options? If aftermarket, what's out there that would work with that weight rating? The universal Thule and Yakima setups look like they support around 75-80lbs. Are there others I could look into?

 

The rails and cross bars support minimal weight .... best I recall is 50lbs [Corection 75lbs]... members please correct me if I am wrong. Keep in mind the cross members and the rails have their own limit.

I would not consider hauling anything other than a few skies up there.

Just for fun: The first few RX had a glued on rubber strips on the roof and people thought they can carry luggage. Lexus removed those very quickly and created the rails (which run length wise close to the sides). Then there was air turbulence due to cross members and spoiler. Those were the only problems reported back in 98-99.
