Knock and oxygen sensor replacement question...
My 2000 Lexus RX300 has O2 and knock sensor errors for few years.
It's my 2nd vehicle and not much used so didn't repair it as local shops wanted too much, over $1500.
Fast forward, I found few friends knew a mechanic who works from home and much cheaper labor.
I don't want to keep this car for another 10 years so don't want to spend on OEM sensors.
Cost of OEM knock and O2 sensors is over $700 while aftermarket is less than half.
Questions:
1. I know OEM is recommended here but will the aftermarket knock sensors work for few years?
Duralast Knock Sensor SU5377 Part # SU5377 SKU # 361907 $59.99 each
( are $170 each).
2. What is the OEM brand for the knock sensors? NTK? Walker?
3. Should the knock sensor harness be replaced? what's the brand and part number?
I see 82219-07010 and also 82219-33030. Either works?
The mechanic wants to replace the knock sensors first to see what errors go away before replacing O2 sensors.
I had the O2 error code before the knock sensor code so I'm thinking of replacing the upstream sensor with Denso 234-9009.
Thank you

If it's just one knock sensor maybe you can get by with the hack:

As much as I hate aftermarket parts for things like sensors, I've installed cheap knockoff knock sensors and harness from eBay (less than $30) on both my 00' RX300 and 02' ES300 - DIY'd it myself, so not much to lose other than time. Granted, I've only put 35k miles collectively between both cars since the new knock sensors - so far, so good!
Whatever parts you decide to go with - yes, definitely do the harness. In many cases (at least I've seen a handful), it's just the harness that goes bad!

Also, do I need to replace intake gasket? There are many different sets online, not sure which one is correct.

I would replace the intake gasket for sure - I went with OEM on that last time, if I'm reading my emails right I used 17178-20020 and 17177-20020

To be clear, I wouldn't recommend going this route if you're paying someone to do it (or you value your time more than tinkering around). But if you still decide to go this route, the last one I bought for my 2002 ES300 came from seller partscollect on eBay

I'll buy OEM harness and gasket.
Those two gaskets you mentioned look the same. Do I need both or just one?

RX300 is a V6 and you have to get under the intake ,,, You should replace the gaskets as you put both banks together. We have a DIY thread on knock sensors. It is an expensive and long repair [that is why to me I would pay more for the parts for the reassurance. I am not trying to talk you out of your plan, but keep in mind the mechanic will eat the redo cost if the mechanic purchases the parts.

Are there two intake gaskets or one?
Those part numbers (17178-20020 and 17177-20020) show the same thing.

I can do small things that are right outside but this is out of my skill set.

Visit your local lexus parts store or on line stores like Lexus of Atlanta. They have drawings that show the parts. You will need one for each bank and when the intake merges then you need one. I think I purchased 3 or 4 gaskets. If you can lay your hands on service manual, it marks the parts that should be discarded. Make sure your mechanic has the torque specs as some of the gaskets are not very forgiving.

Mystery, this involves loosening just one bolt. The knock sensor is clamped down to the outside of the inlet manifold. nothing else is touched on the engine. The wire from the sensor you clamp down is routed through the firewall and is joined to the two knock sensor wires you cut and join at the computer behind the glove box.

Is there a video of this process? That'll give me an idea if I can do it or not.
thanks

Note. I did knock sensors on my RX300 (which I no longer own) A few months prior I had done o2 sensers. The rear bank O2 sensor was a PITA to get at, but I got it done.
When I was doing the knock sensors, and had the intake manifold off; that 02 sensor was RIGHT THERE. It would have been 100x easier to replace then, vs the way I did it. I would strongly suggest replacing it while the intake manifold is off.
